I am blessed (cursed?) with a strong and almost binary aesthetic; it is apparent to me when collections of items or views are perfectly aligned. This sense of alignment becomes a governing hand in deciding what to paint.

I have always felt I was not quite like others, a half-step off beat; in a way my paintings reflect this.  Lately, I have been exploring areas just a little bit beyond reality as I seek to stir my imagination.  I find satisfaction in bringing to life ideas that deviate somewhat from complete representation and move toward a peculiar realism, painting images that are also just a half-step off.

I grew up in rural Maryland in the 1950s and ‘60s.  We were very fortunate to have an accomplished artist as a neighbor.  She taught weekly painting classes for children in my neighborhood.  We were quite young and painted with oils and sketched outdoors.  Helen was a remarkable individual and a lasting gift to us all.

I took classes in painting and sculpture in my early 20s.  I painted in acrylics, mostly from dreams but also from images from my surroundings.  Over the many years since I have always sketched and dabbled but didn’t engage fully until a few years ago.  I started back with watercolors, but found them somehow wanting and imprecise.  Switching to oils has been greatly satisfying.

I have a BS in Business and an MBA from the University of Virginia.  I used to say that business school killed my imagination.  Now I am not so sure.
